Archives For February 2012

In an effort to be a person who does things, I got out and did things the other day.  ALL THE THINGS!  In actuality, it was another gorgeous winter day in the bay and it was time to get outside.

First thing you need on an outside adventure: Animal Crackers!  I need all the calcium I can get.

Next up, COFFEE!  I took a drive out to Trouble Coffee for my hipster breakfast of coffee and cinnamon toast.  After being visually fed by flannel and leather boots I got back into the car and drove south along the coast, where I ended up at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse.  I’ve stayed here before with friends and this place is really chill.  South of Half Moon Bay and in a pretty desolate area on the coast, this place is a nice little diamond in the sand.  They have this really incredible hot tub that overlooks the Pacific Ocean.  The lighthouse started operation at sunset on November 15, 1872.  NEATO!

What is this thing?  And who is that handsome devil in the reflection?

Thanks lighthouse!  It was such a great day to walk the grounds of the lighthouse, but time to keep going.  I ended up in Santa Cruz and called up an old friend from high school that is studying (getting stoned) at UC Santa Cruz.  We went to Verve Coffee because I obviously needed more caffeine. Well not as hipster to my tastes, the coffee was still good.  Let’s be real though, half the reason I grab coffee is to czech out hipsters.

Although the light bulbs were pretty rad.

Said bye to my heavily medicated (stoned) friend and drove back up to SF.  I stopped to take pictures of the sunset and blasted Geographer (look for a post about this amazing band soon.)

We All Scream for Pakwan!

David —  February 23, 2012 — Leave a comment

I like my food like I like my men, meaty and flavorful.  Give me hot sauce, peppers, buttery and savory.

Pakwan is the latest obsession of mine, and for good reason.  There are lots of reasons to avoid this place.  They don’t take credit card, even though they clearly have the technology to, for one.  The other is the surly employee behind the register.  Maybe it’s part of the experience, but I don’t seem to love his inability to be polite.  Once you jump these hurdles, welcome to paradise.  For one thing, you can BYOB to the restaurant and party hard while getting your vindaloo on.  Second, this is probably the best Indian food you’ll ever have for this price point.  IT IS SO DELICIOUS!  I grab the lamb vindaloo or the chicken tikka masala most often.  I like meat.

Zach is getting this garlic na’an soirée started.

Thanks for the take-out Pakwan man.  I appreciate your judgement for ordering 5 pieces of naan.  Yes, we ate it all.

Let’s recap.

  1. Great food
  2. Surly employees
  3. BYOB!
  4. No credit card :-(
  5. Take Out Good
  6. Overeating Bad

P.S. Ending with Thin Mint Ice Cream from Mitchell’s Ice Cream and a pie baked by the lovely Cézanne.  You can’t mess that up.  Life is too short for bad tasting calories, people.

I live in a funky little building in the Castro.  I always equivilate my living situation to that of one in Tales of the City.  It’s a little odd-ball.  My neighbors that I share my floor with collect the most random assortment of things.  I’ll explore with you, my steadfast readers, these oddities.

First up, the reindeer.  It probably is a moose, but I feel a reindeer is much more entertaining.

Not only is this little creature an accent piece, but it seems to also hold the window up.  GENIUS!  Thanks for all the hard work, little guy.

Happy Hump-as-Many-as-Will-let-you Day!

Here on the blog, Occasionally we will feature a hot feline or two.  My fave Felis Catus (Thanks Wikipedia!) would have to be Hemingway.  He is the cat from down under (my apartment) and I’m fortunate enough to be watching him for a couple weeks.  He has amazing thumbs!

Now isn’t that one hot pussy?!

Send me your cat photos and I’d love to ferociously feature your fantastic felines.

P.S. I am not racist… you can send cute puppy photos also!

Windy Roads

Last Friday I was feeling quite restless.  It was a sunny day in San Francisco and I was not going to spend another day watching a marathon of Rupaul’s Drag Race.  (The best show on television after The View.)  I was in the mood for adventure, and of course adventure means going to eat somewhere.  I’m a fatty.

Thankfully my little Nishta (Zach) was around and he knows better than to argue with me; so he joined.  We were off to The Hummingbird in Fairfax, CA.

Zach wasn’t quite sure what to get…

…until he came across the Po’ Boy sandwich.  It is Mardi Gras week, after all.  Zach REALLY loves his Po’ Boy!

Not long after the incomprable Owen met us at Good Earth!  We were being healthy hippies and drinking a daily detox juice.  Owen is a super hippie with super hippie powers, like smelling good ALL the time.  Can’t you smell her from your screen?

The little guy and I left Owen in the capable hands of fellow hippies and we left for the OCEAN!  Well, almost the ocean.  To travel from Fairfax to Bolinas, CA there is this long and windy road.  This excites me because I have this fantasy that one day I’ll live in the mountains with lots of trees and lakes.  Of course we took pit-stops along said windy road for some photo ops!

HEADSHOT ALERT!

Finally we made it to the real ocean and had a Kumbaya moment or two.

My Love, My Philz

David —  February 19, 2012 — Leave a comment

I don’t necessarily consider myself a man of routine.  I have this urge to try new things constantly, whether it be a restaurant, movie, camping or dropping it like it’s hot. I do however do one thing, habitually.  I stroll down to Philz Coffee on 18th St. every morning.  The crew there is wonderful and I get genuinely excited to see them every single morning.  I thought I’d feature a couple of those hot babes on the blog today.

Babe #1: Weiners (Anthony)

He likes his eggs scrambled.

Babe #2: Catalina

She likes her eggs over medium.

Who wouldn’t want these lovelies making their coffee for them?

“A Case of You”

Welcome to A Box of Paints!

I’m really excited about working on this blog.  I consider myself a man of many interests sprinkled with a dash of crazy.  The name for this blog came from the famous and talented Joni Mitchell.

She has had such an influence on music and to myself, personally.  The famous line from Love Actually said by Emma Thompson’s character is “Joni Mitchell taught me how to love.”  I couldn’t agree more.

I hope this blog is somewhat entertaining and somewhat engaging.  Expect a lot of photos, funny videos, stories and opinions.  It could all be shit, but it’s my shit.

ENJOY!

P.S. This is where I sleep!
